Gustaf the giant hound dog

Gustaf is one of the biggest hound dogs we had seen in a long time! He came to the shelter dirty, skinny, unneutered and covered in ticks. We all loved watching Gustaf blossom during his time at the shelter and we were thrilled when he got a new home of his own last April.


We just got an update from Gustaf's family and it certainly made our day. They even included some pictures of this lucky hound dog enjoying his new life! What a happy ending for our favorite giant hound dog.

"Hi - We thought you might like an update on Gustaf. "Gus" is happy and well. He is such a sweet soul - and just loves to cuddle. I know-doesn't sound like you average hound. :) Gus lives inside but has 6 acres (fenced) to roam. He gets along great with our other dogs and pretty well with the horses. We just love him and so does anyone who meets him! Thank You to everyone who works and volunteers.."

The Humane Society gets very excited when animals are placed in their “forever homes”. It is always surprising when we think a dog is wonderful and he/she will be adopted quickly and yet they are still at the shelter months later waiting for their new family. Daisey and Hagan are two dogs that are loved by many, but they have yet to be adopted.

Daisey is a Dalmatian/Pointer mix and is about thirty pounds. She is white with black spots and is about a year old. When she first came to us at the shelter, she was only 6 months old. She is growing up at the shelter and though we have all come to love her it’s more than time for her to be with a family. She does great in the car and loves to go for long walks especially around Boomer Lake. She loves her best friend Hagan.

Hagan is an Australian Cattle dog/Blue Heeler mix and is about 35 pounds. He is white with black spots and is about a year old. He was found at a tractor store in Stillwater in August with his brother. His brother was adopted almost immediately, but Hagan remains with us at the shelter. He loves to play tug of war with Daisey and gets along with all of the other dogs. His favorite thing is to just sit in a lap and relax.

They are both great dogs and we hope that January 2011 will be their time to find their new “forever homes” so that they will have a great New Year.

Our current needs list include paper towels, Kong dog toys, High Efficiency Laundry Detergent, old blankets and cat beds.

Pet Watch from the director- 1/9/11

The Humane Society had a very busy 2010. We were able to find Forever Homes for 459 dogs and 325 cats. Some of our animals stayed in Stillwater but many found their new families in many different states including Iowa, Kansas, Arkansas, Texas, New York, Tennessee, New Mexico and Illinois. We love hearing the happy tails stories from the families.

Banjo was a Coon hound that we had at the shelter for quite awhile. He was very happy but became bored at the shelter; he is now living the life of a search and rescue dog in Albuquerque, NM. His new family sent us a great email about his new life.

Banjo has picked up his hound skin put on some muscle and his coat looks amazing. I think he even gets cuter with every breath. Everyone at the park loves his voice as do I. He is a good lookout at the house, he gets excited when my friends first turn onto the street not when they pull in the drive or get out of the car, and each corner is over 100 yards away so that is kind of amazing. He can open any door or gate that isn't locked. I'm going to start his scent training soon now that he's almost done with the normal house pet stuff. The trust bond between us is almost solidified. I have even found he listens and reacts better if you don't tell him what to do but ask him with plenty of please and thank yous. Some nights he shares my queen size bed with me but he also has his own room with bed and bowls. He eats fish, rabbit, deer and two nights ago he had a spinach salad with sun dried tomatoes and fresh tilapia. To my surprise he even ate it with the olive oil and balsamic vinegar dressing I used. Over all I think he is doing quite well and I sure like having him around.

We have so many great animals just waiting to make 2011 the year that they find their new families. Please stop in to meet some of them.

Emma's happy tale

'Gretta' was adopted from the Humane Society of Stillwater as a puppy almost a year ago. It was love at first sight- when her new mom saw her she knew she was meant to be hers! She lives a great (spoiled!) life now and even gets to sleep under the covers every night.

The Christmas holidays have given the Humane Society a lot to be thankful for this year. We wish to thank everyone who stopped by the shelter, took an angel from our tree, and brought back wonderful donations. Without the help of the community, we would not be able to keep the homeless animals of Stillwater happy and healthy until they find their forever homes. In particular, we would especially like to thank the Montessori Preschool for all the cleaning supplies, dog/cat treats and collars and the Phi Mu Sorority for the cases of cat food and treats. We also are grateful for the many families who dropped off donations of all kinds and the many wonderful foster families that opened their hearts and homes to seven dogs and 2 cats so that they were able to spend the Holidays with loving families. To those of you who stopped in during your break to give lots of love and attention to the animals that remained at the shelter, we also thank you. We all know that this is a very busy time of year so taking the time to stop in at the Humane Society is very much appreciated.

We currently have some wonderful cats and dogs that are ready to start the New Year off in a new home so stop by the shelter and meet them. Flower is a Border Collie/Labrador mix. She was only five months old when she came to us, but she has been at the shelter for almost three months. She is growing up to be a wonderful dog. It would be even better if she was growing up with a family. Flower has a lot of energy and though she is smaller than our adult dogs, she loves to play rough with the older dogs.

Tula is a beautiful Tortoiseshell cat with gorgeous eyes. She is about two and half years old and she is very friendly. She likes other cats and is cautious around dogs. She loves to lie in your lap and is very gentle.
