Lily: From Pit to Pet

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."- Martin Luther King, Jr.

She was dumped over someone's back fence, crawling with fleas, wounds still open and bleeding. When I saw her, all I could say was "Something very bad happened to this dog". We can speculate all we want, but we don't know what happened that Friday night. What we do know is what happened next..

At many shelters, Lily's story would have ended here. There would be no next chapter. Here in Stillwater, we are lucky enough to have wonderful animal control officers that know scars on a Pit Bull don't mean it is a bad dog. Lily was seen by our veterinarian, her temperament was tested and she was brought into the Humane Society adoption program.

Lily is far from a bad dog. Lily is really a sweet marshmallow of a dog. I can take food and chewies right out of her mouth and trim her nails without complaint. She craves human attention and will whine shamelessly if she wants some love. And if you thought those scars were from something our sweet girl started..

Lily and Obi get ready to chase!

Some nose to nose time

The new buddies share a love of tennis balls

So there you have it. Our sweet Pit Bull princess is healthy, happy and ready to find a castle to live out the fairy tale ending she deserves. If you think you could be your Prince(ss) Charming, please come in and meet her!

Mayor's service day at the shelter

The Stillwater mayor loves on our new rescue Millie while waiting for volunteers to arrive

Stillwater's mayor Nathan Bates arranged an event last Friday where he encouraged OSU students and Stillwater residents to come together and volunteer at the Humane Society. Many kitties were cuddled, dogs were walked and rooms were cleaned! It was a great help to have so many people willing to get dirty in order to get the dogs clean for Walk N' Wag the next day. We sincerely hope the volunteers that attended this event will return in the future to help us care for the animals.

Two volunteers trimming nails- a big job here at the shelter!

So remember, Stillwater, this is your shelter. Come down, help out and say hello to the animals!

Two cats seek jobs

Madge and Chamomile aren't just looking for a home. They're looking for a job! These two girls just aren't feeling the whole stay-at-home cat routine. These feisty felines have degrees in rodent extermination and want to put them to work! Have a nice, safe barn with a spot for these two?

They aren't too high maintenance but do require a starting salary of no less than food to supplement what they catch and benefits that include being kept safe from the elements and big bad predators. (There is no adoption fee to a good barn home)

Adoption fees

Most of our pets are available for an adoption fee of 50 dollars (covering spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, deworming, Heartworm (dog) or FIV/Feluek (cat) negative, and a two week health guarantee). As anyone who has ever taken a pet to the vet knows, that is a really good deal! Some of our dogs have a higher adoption fee to help with medical costs of animals who need extra care.

Betsy Ross and her littermates were adopted for higher adoption fees

Before you say "Wait, that's not fair!", remember that we only charge higher adoption fees for dogs we know will be adopted very quickly (the increased fee does not increase their time spent at the shelter). And what wouldn't be fair is turning away all the sweet animals who need a little special care before they are adoptable.

Rizzo (and her siblings) came to us very neglected and sick. Rizzo has a wonderful life now with a great family. We are so glad we could give her the chance at life she deserved!

Leaps of faith

It took us over a year to place her and her sisters. It was worth it- all three have wonderful families.

At the Humane Society, we are all people of great faith. If we weren't, we couldn't do this job. Every week we rescue more and more animals- we have no promise of adopters willing to take them home, no promise of donations to help with their care, and no guarantee that our volunteers will show up again tomorrow to tend to them.

This litter of kittens came to us sick, all have recovered and found great homes.

So blindly, we leap. We take in a litter of sick kittens, a scared dog who needs extra TLC, a special pet that may take a while to find the right home..because we have faith. Faith that our volunteers and donors will come through for the animals and faith that there are great adopters out their waiting to open their homes and hearts.
Tomorrow, we will rescue even more animals. And hope that our 'leaps of faith' will pay off again.

Tyler, now adopted.

Siamese, Shih Tzus and Shar Peis, oh my!

Archie, a Shih Tzu waiting for a home.

Mason, a 4 month old Shar Pei pup waiting for a family.

Mizu, a Siamese with all of the great personality traits a meezer lover will appreciate!

When you think of dogs at a Humane Society, you probably envision some so scruffy little mixed breeds or big, non-descript crosses. And you're right, we have plenty of those! And all of them are great pets worthy of homes. But what you probably don't envision is pure bred animals. According to the HSUS, one forth of dogs entering shelters are purebred! And based on my time in rescue, I would say that is a low number. AKC papers don't guarantee you a home!

A darling little 'ewok' (liver Shih Tzu) that we treated for heartworms and found a great home for.

One of a litter dumped outside the HS this summer. She is now in her new home.

So if you are looking for a purebred, don't think you can't adopt! Try your local shelter, then contact breed rescue or search on www.petfinder.com

One thing in common

Every single dog and cat in our shelter has one thing in common: Their parents weren't spayed or neutered.

This sounds like a really silly observation, but it just emphasizes how important it is to have your pet spayed or neutered. Don't wait for him to 'bulk up', don't let her have 'just one litter'. Every dog and cat we have here was once a newborn, born because someone neglected to fix their pets.

Your pet can be fixed as early as 8 weeks, and don't wait past 6 months. If you are having trouble affording it, contact a low cost service in your area. If you live in Stillwater, that service is CAAP. http://caapok.org/

Prayer of the Unborn Pet
I ask for the privilege of not being born
Until you can and will assure me of a safe, loving, lifelong home and a human caretaker who will love me, protect me, keep me healthy and safe from harm, and never forfeit or abandon me
Until you can assure me a right to live as long as I am able to enjoy life
Until my body and heart are precious and men have ceased to exploit, neglect, abuse or discard me because I am cheap and plentiful, I beg of you, please

not to be born.
